I.N.Ireland

History- In 400 BC the Celtics settled in Ireland and in 1016 BC to 800 AD, they were constantly invaded by the Vikings. King Henry the 2nd made himself Lord of Ireland in 1172. England divided into two parts in 1921. The North stayed English while the South became a free state.

Current politcal state (ie, N. part of UK)- The Northern part of the U.K. is currently English ruled.

extremism (ie, IRA)- The Irish Republican Army were extremist who killed persons with bombs in N. Ireland to show a point and to scare the British.

reunification (who wants it? who doesn't? means what?)- The Catholics want to reunify but Protestants do not. Reunification is the act of coming together.

III. Pacific Rim/ Trade

history(ie, Kennedy 1961)- The U.S. dominates trade in 1945-64. JFK gives billions of dollars to rebuild Japan.

trade balance (in favor of who?)- The trade balance was in favor for the US with 315 million dollars per year. It later shifted in favor for Japan in 1965 with an average of 27 billion dollars per year.

IV. National Debt

national debt vs. deficit- National dept is the money owed. A deficit is the budget which is used to balance the National Dept.

magnitude of national debt(possible analogies)- The dept grows larger and larger each year.

effect on future- As years go by, the debt will grow exponentially. Our children or grand children will pay the price.

VII. AIDS

Basic facts from hand-out- AIDS cases are rapidly increasing involving babies born to mothers carrying the HIV and among sexually active teens. There is currently 136,000 cases of AIDS in the U.S. An HIV virus causes Aids.

treatment & research- AZT is used to retard the replication of the AIDS virus. Experimental drugs are being developed and tested. The FDA are being forced by AIDS activist to speed up drug trials

history- The AIDS origin is believed to be from Africa. The first case of AIDS was in 1976. AIDS came through the main stream after the death of Rcock Hudson in 1985.

causes & prevention- The HIV virus causes AIDS. Many researchers think that a vaccine for AIDS is at least ten years away.
