World’s Single Greatest Problem

Many problems persist in the world such as racism, natural disasters, hate, drug abuse, or rape. The world’s greatest problem is crime. Not only do people get hurt but also the fact that children are left without any parents.

The number one rated crime rated country is Dominica with 113.82 per 1000 people according to nationmaster.com. The rest of the top five are New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, and then Chile. The United Kingdom follows after Chile and the United States is ranked at eight. There are many different types of crimes such as hate, rape, and murder. The most common is rape. U.S. had about 90,000 rape crimes in 1999 and South Africa had about 53,000 in 2000. These numbers show that there needs to be more enforcement and protection in the world.

One of the least crime rate countries is Japan with only 0.62 per 100,000 people. This does not mean that crime does not happen there but they occur less often than other countries. One reason is that Japanese are more shocked to unheard crimes. In the U.S, when you here about a crime, its most like that you will be worried unless it is near your neighborhood. When Japanese here about a crime, they say to themselves that “something has to be done here”.

An example of a crime is when one gang member talks joke to another member from another gang. The member that was made a joke of would get angry and tell his other members and eventually the two gangs will get into a fight. While in the fight there would be gunshots. These shots may go through windows, cars, and other populous areas. There may be multiple murders in these kinds of quarrels and a lot of the times, the suspect or suspects are not even cached. Therefore these people will most likely do another crime.

Another example is when a little girl walks home from school and later she is not found. Sure there are alerts such as the Amber Alert but I do not think it is enough. The girl should have walked with a friend and be more aware of her surroundings. The sooner we stop thinking that these things will never happen to me or to someone you care about, the less crime there will be.

Response

I agree with Alex Berman on why we are the problem for today’s issues. I agree that there are constantly disagreements about what should be done. While these problems are being concluded, more problems occur such as natural disaster.

The example Alex gave about Hurricane Katrina was a good one. While people were drowning and being killed, what was the government doing? They were actually blocking help instead of gaining some. While doctors were being cleared to help, people were dieing. The rescue effort was just too slow. On the news, I have heard the reason why the rescue effort was so slow was because of the worry of a terrorist attack.

I also agree that when people desire to fight for what is right by force, it only makes matters worse. An example was Hitler eliminating all Jews. Firstly, killing innocent persons is not right and this only led to a war. WWII had 67% dead civilians and the other 33% were military. More than half of the people who were not even fighting in the war died. The sooner we come to negotiable agreements, more innocent lives may be saved.

War is one of the worst ways to solve a problem. At times war may be the only way but if it can be prevented then it should never happen. War leads to more deaths than there should be and can destruct a country. War can also lead to the production of weapons of mass destruction. If war never occurred, these weapons would not need to exist and therefore there would be no worries of being A-bombed.

If world peace is possible then why not have one? It is us who shape this world and is our responsibility to let the future be better than it is today.
