1.  What were the underlying causes of WWI?

The underlying causes of WWI were militarism, alliance system, imperialism, and nationalism. Militarism was an armed race between Britain, Germany, and France. The alliance system was thought to promote peace but instead it created higher tensions between countries. The two alliances in WWI were The Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. Imperialism was the ruling of colonies where Europe, France, Britain, Germany, and Italy all fought for. Nationalism gave people an idea of having an independent country.

2.  What was the specific cause of WWI?

The specific cause of WWI was when Gacrilo Princip, a Serbian revolutionary, shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary wanted the Serbians to be punished for what they did. This is what set off the war.

WWI Military Training Camps

The WWI military training camps were very rough and it was a difficult place to live in. The camps were hard on the soldiers in order for them to be ready for war. There were a limited number of supplies and food. Although life was hard at the camps, it was still better than war and living in the trenches.

Mustard Gas

Mustard Gas was first used by the German Army and it would blister a victim’s skin, make their eyes very sore, and they would vomit. The mustard gas would cause internal and external bleeding and it was extremely painful. It took a person usually four to five weeks to die from the poison.

Life inside the trenches was harsh. There would be random deaths because of shellfire while the victims were lying down or in a dugout. Lice would be another problem in the trenches because they cause Trench Fever which is a painful disease that would not go away for twelve weeks. There was daily boredom and men seldom got a full sleep because they would be ordered new task often. Soldiers would have to wake up each morning and do a ‘stand to’ where they had to get up and stand guard. They would then clean their rifles and eat breakfast until they issued new orders.
